BMP Innovation AB has received Project Support of 5.2 million SEK from the Swedish Board of Agriculture in cooperation with the European Commission for Agriculture and Rural Development for the Projekt Pigg. The project is ongoing and will be completed by September 2021.

BMP’s business is on the edge of innovation when it comes to non-invasive digitalised animal temperature measurements. Some new ideas, firmly based on relevant academic research, on programming etc have been implemented to improve quality of reading. Therefore we choose to introduce the Black Box as a way to show that the next step has been taken on the path of innovation.

New tests and more data collection in the real environment.
We have a very good cooperation with some major pig breeders close to Stockholm. They have the whole range of pigs, from the newborn piglet to the grown animal. Here we can test technical solutions and algorithms. And we can also discuss new ideas as well as new concepts and get the professional opinion. It’s absolutely necessary to have this kind of contact, a foot on the ground, so to speak, when doing something ground-breaking such as we do. How, otherwise, do you know what you’re doing is on track…

We do not only work with pigs but also with cows and calves.
As strange as it might seem but through the lens of an IR-camera, there is really not all that much difference between a cow and a pig. It’s all about interpretations of pixels and the algorithms behind them that do the data-crunching.
And, of course, making sure that there are peer-reviewed, proper scientific methods on which to rely and build. This is really important, otherwise you could have a very long way to go before you know what to look for on the animals, what’s important and what’s not, what to achieve with the programming of the cameras and how to interpret what you see. Here, we have a great co-operation with leading academia, both when it comes to cows and pigs, in Sweden and abroad.

Our area of expertise and main focus area is IR or thermal cameras. But when needed we integrate colour or ordinary cameras in our system. This picture is taken from quite a height using the zoom-function of one of those cameras.
The reason for using an ordinary camera is the same as filming with a not optimal lens, getting reference material and getting to know pros and cons of different equipment combinations in a very taxing environment. Colour pictures also work great as reference material in data collections situations where the material is compared to the material from the IR cameras.
However, sometimes a sequence or picture in colour can sometimes be better. Two quick examples are 1) when you have to recognise the individual animal for different reasons, something that is quite difficult using an IR camera and 2) when something new shows up on the IR recording and you need visual information to understand afterwards what you’re actually seeing.

Standing on the rail we filmed pigs moving about in their pens. This picture comes from a film taken with one of our experimental cameras. As you can see, the pigs are somewhat rounded at the edges. The fish eye-perspective is due to the type of lens being used. The lens is part of a wide-angle camera usually used for pens much larger than this one.
Why we used it on a small pen? Well, it’s a question of getting reference material and getting to know pros and cons of different equipment combinations in a very taxing environment. And one thing we’ve realised so far, Foppatofflor are great! In that environment.

We do not only travel abroad. As a matter of fact, most of our trips are domestic, in Sweden. A few weeks ago, some of us visited a pig farm to the west of Stockholm.
Great fun – and most definitely important – to leave the office and the computers and meet reality! And in real life, you do not have the perfect office-enviroment always.
“You have to make do with what you have. Balancing on a rail in foppatofflor and placing your computer on the nearest barrel is quite a change from our normal days!”

During the conference our Sales Manager, Anibal Brunelli, gave an interview for the Chinese television regarding our company and how we do intelligent monitoring of livestock through infrared technology. The television journalist caught up with him after he had held a presentation on what BMP does before a fully seated auditorium.
“The presentation went very well and we had an active audience. The journalist asked relevant questions and thereby showing that they were well prepared and interested in understanding the applicability of our systems and what we can do to improve the business for farmers and farming management system manufacturers. I am impressed by their knowledge and interest in emerging technologies. Among other things they wanted to know my expectations from the conference, which were to provide a platform for companies and individuals to meet and exchange ideas – and I have to say that the conference really delivered!”

For the second year in a row, BMP Innovation AB is in China, invited by the China-Nordic Association for Technology, Innovation and Development! BMP was asked to join the event “Forum for Green Tech and Innovation” that took place during May 7-8 in Qingdao City, China.
Our Sales Manager, Anibal Brunelli, together with Senior Advisor Yiqiu Xu, have been attending and actively contributing to the high level of discussion at the conference and have had the chance to introduce our Company and current developments. The forum was designed to promote technology cooperation and exchange between both countries.
Representatives from universities such as Sweden’s Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), key companies within the green and high tech sector from both countries, senior diplomats and authorities from China’s government were part of this distinguished forum.
